Sunshine and Lollipops {Play Dough Cookies}

I'm longing for the happy feeling of spring and sunny weather, so I whipped up a batch of play dough cookies to add some "sunshine and lollipops" to our life!

My recipe is inspired by Play Dough Cookies @ All Recipes. However, I'm on a Trim Healthy Mama journey, and really wanted to enjoy some edible play dough fun with my children! So, I came up with a low-carb version! Plus, it's good for them, too, as there is no sugar in these cookies! They are also gluten free. The "sunshine" yellow is all natural food coloring, but the other natural colors were a flop, so I improvised with regular food coloring.

This was quite an exciting process to not only play with edible play dough, but bake them into cookies, and eat them, too!

Whether you use the recipe from All Recipes, or my trimming, healthy version here, I highly recommend you try this if your kids love play dough! I wish that this was the only kind of play dough we ever used and plan to do this again.

Next time, I really want to try the India Tree Natural Decorating Colors that Amy @ Wildflower Ramblings used in her edible finger paint. The colors look a lot prettier than the kind I picked up at Natural Grocers.

Here's my trim, healthy, sugar free, grain free recipe:

Trim Healthy Play Dough Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 c. butter softened

  • 3 ounces cream cheese

  • 1/3 cup xylitol (I found this cheaper at Natural Grocers)

  • 2/3 cup erythritol*

  • 1 tsp. powdered stevia extract (or to taste)*

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp. vanilla

  • 1/4 tsp. salt

  • 2 cups almond flour

  • 3/4 cup coconut flour

  • food coloring (optional)

*Or use Truvia to taste.

Directions: Cream butter, cream cheese and sweeteners until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and mix well. Add salt and flours and mix until a dough forms. Divide and tint, if desired. Then wrap in plastic and chill. When the dough has chilled for a couple hours, you are ready to play! The recipe on All Recipes has directions on how to make a lollipop. The texture of the dough is a little different than regular cookie dough would be, and makes a softer cookie. But, it was really neat to be able to play with "play dough" that was not only edible, but that we could bake and eat, too! Do you have an edible play dough recipe you'd like to share? 1. How cool to make bake cookies with it! Nico wanted to bake our edible dough but it's not the kind where you can do that.

  4. This looks so colorful and fun! I do have a question: doesn't all that sweetener mess with your stomach?

  5. Hi Sarah, xylitol is the only one that I know of that causes GI upset IF you eat too much before your system gets used to it, so that's why I only used 1/3 cup. I've not personally noticed any problems with erythritol, stevia, or Truvia. This makes quite a big batch, and we didn't eat them all at the same time, so we didn't have any problems with these cookies. :)
