The Tale of Peter Rabbit - Week 2 | FI♥AR with Bo

Our bucket list continued from last week...

make a list of Mr. McGregor's garden
"First he ate some lettuces and some French beans, and then he ate some radishes." -The Tale of Peter Rabbit
I had Bo search the text and illustrations to help me make a list:
  • lettuces
  • French beans
  • radishes
  • carrots
  • parsley
  • cucumbers
  • cabbages
  • potatoes
  • gooseberries
  • peas and beans
  • onions
plant radishes

Radishes grow quick, so I thought these would be fun to grow ; however, this is still on our bucket list because we woke to snow falling on Monday morning. I resigned myself to the fact that it will have to wait and bought some instead.

grow and observe French bean seeds in a glass jar

I determined to see if we could germinate some bean seeds and watch them grow,

I placed several layers of paper towel inside a jar, filled the jar about 1/4 full of water, and placed the bean seeds between the jar and the paper towel.

sprout peas to eat
"An old mouse was running in and out over the stone door-step, carrying peas and beans to her family in the wood." - The Tale of Peter Rabbit

and...

grow carrot tops

Carrots are not mentioned in the text, but there is an illustration of Peter eating carrots in the story.

have a Peter Rabbit garden salad

I couldn't resist making the Spring Salad with Blackberry Vinaigrette from our row of Albert. That salad has been my all time favorite recipe from the Five in a Row! The recipe starts on page 10-25 in Volume 4.

Ingredients we used:
  • fresh lettuces (butter, red leaf, oak leaf, chicory, romaine)
  • fresh whole organic blackberries
  • sliced organic strawberries
  • thinly sliced red onion
  • diced cucumber
  • sliced yellow bell pepper

The Blackberry Vinaigrette dressing is made from blackberries, rice wine vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper.

We decided to call it Flopsy Bunny's Blackberry Salad.

make a recipe from the Peter Rabbit Cookbook

Bo wanted to make a sandwich, so his dad read him The Tale of Little Pig Robinson so we could make Little Pig Robinson's Peanut Butter Sandwiches. The recipe includes three types of filling: peanut butter, chopped celery, and sesame seed; peanut butter, lemon juice, and raisins; and peanut butter, chopped cashews, and shredded coconut. The filling is served between Banana Nut Loaf or whole grain bread.

And since we're having sandwiches, we might as well make Squirrel Nutkin's Banana Nut Loaf to make the sandwiches with!

I added honey to the filling and Bo added sliced bananas on top before smooshhing the two half slices together to form a proper sandwich.

read Beatrix Potter's collection of delightful stories

I borrowed those from the library, but I ended up finding a really pretty Beatrix Potter collection at Costco so we could take our time reading them. They are really beautiful books!

find onomatopoeia in the book

I saw this in the Five in a Row manual, but I wasn't going to do this lesson until it came up in Bo's reading one day this week. He read The Sled and Ducks in a Truck from All About Reading Level 1 which are both full of words associated with a sound. Then I read The Tale of Peter Rabbit again and challenged him find the onomatopoeia.

act out the story with Playmobil

the setting: the woods where Peter lives and Mr. McGregor's garden

"Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries :" - The Tale of Peter Rabbit
"But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden, and squeezed under the gate!" - The Tale of Peter Rabbit
"First he ate some lettuces and some French beans ; and then he ate some radishes ;" -The Tale of Peter Rabbit
"Mr. McGregor came up with a sieve, which he intended to pop upon the top of Peter ; but Peter wriggles out just in time," - The Tale of Peter Rabbit

"And rushed into the tool-shed and jumped into a can." - The Tale of Peter Rabbit

"But presently, as nothing happened, he came out, and climbed upon a wheelbarrow. and peeped over. The first thing he saw was Mr. McGregor hoeing onions. His back was towards Peter, and beyond him was the gate!" - The Tale of Peter Rabbit

"Peter got down very quietly off the wheelbarrow, and started running as fast as he could go, along a straight walk behind some currant bushes... He slipped underneath the gate, and was safe at last in the wood outside the garden." - The Tale of Peter Rabbit

remember crisis thinking

Whenever you are in trouble, S.T.O.P.  (Stop, Think, Observe, Pray/Plan.)

watercolor some of Beatrix Potter's illustrations

I printed these coloring pages onto 90lb watercolor paper (the heaviest paper I thought my printer could handle) so the kids could watercolor. I started watercoloring one, but Bo saw it and thought I was doing such a good job that he wanted to finish mine, bless his heart.

read about gooseberries and black currants

place our story disk on England...

with anticipation for our "around the world" culture study that we will study one year from now! I decided to include this book in our country book basket and row another beloved Five in a Row book set in Scotland. (I already had my heart set on rowing Wee Gillis when we study the British Isles, and won't have time to do both).

meet some wild rabbits

buy Bo a Peter Rabbit stuffy to love on

Bo LOVES stuffed animals. He calls them "stuffies" and actually plays with them, so I couldn't resist this Peter Rabbit for him to love on. ♥

Thanks for following along with our adventures!

  2. Hi Phyllis!

We used the Orchard and Vegetable Garden - I can't find it on Playmobil, but here is a link on amazon for reference: http://amzn.to/2oULihC

The bunnies, the "shed," and the woods came from the Children's Petting Zoo Farm Animals Set (this one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Playmobil-3638-Rare-Childrens-Petting-Zoo-Farm-Animals-Set-Complete-w-Box-/292083178755?hash=item4401839d03:g:3AgAAOSwqBJXWDru) I bought this one on eBay to go with our Little House in the Big Woods play, but all the others i bought from Playmobil directly. I don't see some of them available anymore, though.

The stream with log came from the Country Horseback Ride Playset (http://amzn.to/2oycGiN).

Eliana said Mr. McGregor is a fisherman with different hair and beard, LOL.

  4. HI Rachel! I'm happy it inspired you! I was just thinking that we need to start a new row because we always makes something yummy to eat. :) It helps keep meals fun and interesting for sure.

So, I will be sharing as soon as we officially complete our current school year (about 4 more weeks). I have an outline started, but am still waiting on a few things, but I am planning to share as soon as I finish it!
