Reading Stack | Currently

Our current reading stack:

Or should I say stacks?

Starting in the upper left: Bo’s science stack. He is doing @Sonlight Science A — Biology, Botany, and Physics. He’s learning about our world (currently volcanos) and light. The Usborne Book of Science Activities has always been a favorite of ours, and the Children’s Encyclopedia has esepcially been a favorite of our boys.

In the upper middle: Malachi and Eliana’s science stack. we have another Usborne Science Encyclopedia! Underneath is Gizmo’s and Gadgets, by Jill Frankel Hauser. I love her books. Current topics are energy and heat.

In the upper right: my husband’s reading stack. He does Sonlight Bible A and F with the kids. He’s currently reading out of Ergermeier's Bible Story Book, Case for Christ for Kids by Lee Strobel (we just watched the movie Case for Christ and now I want to read this!), and he is also reading 100 Gateway Cities from HBL F. I love that he does this! It’s such a big help to me. In fact, we recently doubled up on our Sonlight to catch up, and I will be sharing how we did this — without missing a thing.

On the bottom left: our Sonlight Eastern Hemisphere reading stack. Luke just finished William Carey: Obliged to Go, and I read Daughter of the Mountain. So up next is Shadow Spinner, but I haven’t started it yet. Underneath is All the Small Poems. I’ve seen complaints about this book, but we love it! It’s so fun, and this is why: when I read a poem, I omit the title and have the kids guess what it is. They listen intently and enjoy the game. Give it a try!

Under that is More Stories from Grandma’s Attic — Sonlight Grade 4-5 Readers (circa 2013), which is now Grade 4 Readers. She was doing so good keeping up with Level F literature, but I could see that working at what Ruth Beechick would call her challenging level all the time was wearing her out. So, I bumped her back to an easy level to give her an opportunity to just enjoy literature for awhile, and I think she will because she's completed three weeks of the guide in just one week. I gave Malachi two years after he graduated from All About Reading to read whatever he wanted, so I’m pleased that she even tried Level F lit, but she's ready for a break. (For the record, the last book she finished was Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling and had started Around the World in 80 Days.)

On the bottom middle: Malachi’s reading stack. He’s reading A Beautiful Lie and both he and Eliana are reading The Journey to the Eastern Hemisphere book, which is a part of HBL F.

On the bottom right: our Sonlight HBL A reading stack. Currently: Living Long Ago, The Apple and the Arrow, and The Good News Must Go Out. I’m also still reading Stories from Grandma’s Attic which was scheduled a few weeks ago. I am reading this when we do Bo's PAL writing because the chapter titles make excellent clinchers! On the very bottom is The Llama Who Had No Pajama. We lost this book our 2nd week of the school year and just found it this week. We had lots to catch up on, but it was enjoyable, easy to do.
