Y is for Yellow, Yarn and Yo-Yo

~Malachi is 4 1/2 years~
Bible Verse:
(Sing the Word From A-Z)
"You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14 and 16."

Books: The Yellow Ball, by Molly Bang (we are actually still waiting on this through interlibrary loan!)

Go For The Code/Kumon Activities:

Vocabulary words for this lesson include yawn, yell, yarn and yo-yo. We added yellow, yak, yam and yesterday in our lapbook. I think it was really good for Mali to have the break from the Code book because he was losing interest in it. When we picked back up with the letter Y, he was happy to complete each lesson.

He also began working in a few Kumon books. I picked these up when we could not find our missing Code book and thought they would be a good supplemental activity. He especially liked the My Book of Numbers 1-30 and My First Book of Cutting. I was happy that he liked the numbers book because he has not shown much interest in wanting to count. But, he completed over half the book (over 40 pages) in one day! I was confused as to what he did on one page because he was supposed to write the number in the box that corresponds to the number of dots, but he had just wrote a bunch of lines. Mali often "writes" this way, so I didn't notice at first - but after looking again, I realized that he was writing the correct number of tally marks for the number! I'm just happy he is liking his numbers book and tally marks work for me!

I am also surprised that he likes to cut - my oldest did not like to cut at all - of course it helps seeing his brothers cut all the time.
Numbering and cutting with his Kumon books.
Color: Yellow - It was really easy to tie in a color with this lesson!

Activities:

Yellow Yarn Y
We used yellow yarn to make "Yy"

Y Lapbook Activities

My Y Book and letter Yy matching.
Yellow Y Collage

I cut pictures out of a magazine and Malachi glued them onto the Y.

Y Scrapbook
I used two 12x12 scrapbook pages and left space for a few picture collages from our lesson.

Yellow Water Balloon Yo-Yo

The water balloon yo-yo makes a great beginner yo-yo! To make, we just filled a water balloon with half air and half water. To make the handle more stretchy, we loop small thin rubber-bands together into a long chain and then tie it to the end of the balloon. The water acts as a weight and bounces the yo-yo right back! We got this idea out of our Kid Concoctions book a few years ago and it is always a hit!

Math:
Yesterday - we talked about all the things we did yesterday
Year - we discussed the length of a year
Yard - we measured objects with a yardstick. (Malachi is taller than 1 yard!)
