Alphabet Slime Dough

I've made "slime" many times, but I have never made it with liquid starch until now. I fell in love with the idea from reading Aisa Citro's Polka Dot Slime at Fun at Home with Kids. But, to be honest, I was a little intimidated by the whole process after reading so many posts about slime fails. Well, Asia has a post for that! How to Fix Slime That Didn't Work Out

It really is easy if you add the liquid starch slowly. If you overdo the liquid starch, it will be rubbery and not very stretchy. If you do't have enough, it will be very sticky and hard to play with. We really had a lot of fun with this and added alphabet letters to make Alphabet Slime Dough to tie into our reading! Notes from the trenches:

• I used 3 bottles of clear glue and adjusted the amount of liquid starch accordingly.


• The slime didn't stay clear once enough liquid starch was added to a playable consistency - save the money and use white glue! (on sale now for Back to School!)


• A playable consistency is just that - if it sticks to your little one's hands, add more liquid starch! If it get's too thick and rubbery, add more glue. See How to Fix Slime That Didn't Work Out.


• I used magnetic letters and they were hard to clean later because I added more liquid starch! Don't do that. Soaking in vinegar helped remove the excess.


• The magnets were heavy and didn't allow the slime to stretch to it's potential. (I'm guessing that's why Asia had failed attempts at making her Polka Dot Slime?). NEXT time we make Alphabet Slime Dough (and there WILL be one for sure!), I will use FOAM letters. Foam letters should be light enough to allow the slime to stretch to its potential.
