Kindergarten Readiness and Plans for 5K

~Malachi is 4 years 8 months~

In less than 4 months, Malachi will graduate from preschool. During this time, we will be focusing on Kindergarten readiness.

Critical Thinking was recommended to me by a Crew mate. After checking out their site, I thought this might be what I am looking for. If you are interested, I suggest reading:
Rather than mere rote work at this time, I want something that will make my child think!

I also am considering Early Bird Math for 5K. I have used Singapore Math now for levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and I have heard good things about EBM.

However, my main focus will be preparing Mali for Kindergarten. I am hoping he will be ready by age 5 (2/2010), but we will see!

I am using a PreKindergarten Report Card as an assessment tool.

Skills we need to work on before age 5:

  • Writing his first name
  • consonant sounds
  • short vowel sounds
  • counting by rote
  • counting by objects
  • create patterns

Regarding reading, I have a different perspective after starting All About Spelling in our home. This is a product I am reviewing for the Crew and I will be using it with Malachi for 5K. Intitially, just for teaching consonant and vowel sounds. Did you know that O has 4 sounds? We will focus on letter recognition with our letter O activities, but once we begin AAS, we will really focus on learning the correct sounds for each letter.

  2. We are very far away from Kindergarten, but now I am all fired up to get the first Mathematical Reasoning book. For the first time in US I see a book that is more like how the math was taught back home - learning to think, not just learning to count. I looked at the samples, and I think that 3 years might be a stretch even for my pretty advanced child, but that's exactly why I want to introduce this book. Thanks so much for this post and the recommendations.

  3. Are you planning on purchasing the Critical Thinkings Building Thinking Skills workbook? I was actually looking at that one and was very interested in it, but wasn't sure about it because it was so big. If you do get it, would you mind letting me know what you think of it. I would be interested in your opinion.
