Tot School with Bo {Letter Zz}

Letter: Zz
Object: Zipper
Theme: Clothing

~Bo is almost 36 months~

Highlight of the week: Bo is using his name without prompting.  He won't say Boaz yet, but he says "Bo-yeah!" instead of Boo-yeah. :)

And after Bo's last speech therapy with the 2 year old teacher, Bo said "bye" for the first time. When I told Elli this, she said, oh yeah, he's been saying that for me. She has a way with him that no one else does.

Bo has had an explosion of new words since this week!

Words like:
  • "two"
  • "doe" for go
  • "Bo do" (as in Bo wants to do it)
  • "dough" (while patting and rolling biscuit dough with me)
  • "boo" for blue
  • "mine tee" for my key
  • "thee" (soft th) for three
  • "outta my way" (LOL)
  • "tay" and later "otay" for okay
  • "moon," "star," and "sky" in the same sentence - telling me there are stars and a moon in the sky, pointing up as he says sky.

This is remarkable to me. He has had more growth the last two weeks than he has had all year. And he is using these words all on his own, without prompting.

Yay for Fermented Cod Liver Oil, High Vitamin Butter Oil and a diet of healthy fats! :)

Of which, by the way, includes mostly whole milk, cream, butter, eggs, and egg nog.

Baby, Bigger, Biggest

Bo had his first private speech therapy appointment this week. It was recomended by our pediatrician and since Bo is transitioning from the 2 year old teacher to the 3 year old teacher, I thought now would be a good time to add another change.  The first thing I noticed was a giant ZIPPER on the trampoline! :)  He had to zip it up once he was inside for safety. Bo had a total blast exploring the gym/play zone while I talked to the speech therapist. All speech therapy is done during gross motor movement and/or play. I think he will thrive in this environment. He will have a one hour lesson once a week, and continue with 2 twenty minute sessions at the child development center where he has been going.

This is my last tot school post. Bo is turning 3 and graduating Tot School. I will start Preschool in January.

I'm excited for a new adventure!

Thank you for following this journey with me and Bo. I'm thankful to those who have stuck with me through this series. I know it hasn't been a popular series on my blog, but I needed it for me.

I needed it for Bo.♥

~Bo is 35.5 months~

The highlight of our week: Bo saying his name for the first time. He could spell it - B-o. And he could sound out /b/ and /o/, but he couldn't say Bo until now. I am having fun finding ways to get him to repeat it and we are still finding ways to get him to say "Bo" when we say, "What's your name?" (He still spells it). So now Bo can read, "write," spell, sound out and say his name!

I have our theme this week to thank for that. Yo-yo was his first new word this week - Elli got him to say it and was saying it well by the time I sat down to do our tot school the first day.  And I call him Bo-bo, which is a long o as well, so I asked him to say Bo-bo and he did! Then we shortened it to Bo. And I practiced with other consonants as well.

Yay Bo!

Matching up toys to pictures.

I don't even have a picture of the yo-yo I bought for Bo!  Which of course, he can't use as intended, but has had fun winding it up and throwing it around. :)

All the rest...

Bo reading by himself on the couch. He spends a good amount of time looking at books and asks to read them more and more.

Also, Bo has been carrying around plastic bags of his things.  I looked for a small backpack for him, but could not find one locally. So, I ordered him a Skip Hop Zoo Pack Little Kid Backpack on Amazon. I think they are all adorable, but I got him the Dog backpack for his birthday. It will be perfect for him - small and cute!  He is obsessed with carrying his things around and I would feel better if it were a cloth bag, rather than a plastic sack. And amazingly, he can say backpack!

Bo picked out a pack of bubbles for a reward for his efforts in speech therapy.

Baby Says

This is a story from the Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child's First Collection. After reading the story, we played with blocks as suggested in Sonlight's P3/4 guide.

It is a very simple story with only a few words - which I loved. And we read it several times this week. Bo can say all the words, except "okay." (Which he just started saying this week! Except that he can't say the /k/ sound, so it sounds like "tay.")

I found Bo like this one day - doing puzzles and magnets on his own. :)

We played another game this week.

There are no real rules in this game, but he did great taking turns to "break the ice."

One more letter!

This will mostly be a photo share of our week.  This was a really cold and lazy week, which means a real simple tot school week.

Xx is for Xylophone

Bo is sitting on my lap in these photos, which made taking them a little difficult.

Hohner Glockenspiel (Xylophone)

I ordered this for Bo after our first lesson this week in hopes of increasing his interest in our theme and to provide the experience. I'm glad I did. We all love it. Here is his first time playing it. (He was a little shy about playing it at first.)

I almost bought the one that has removable slats for improved sound, but Bo loves carrying this around so I'm glad I didn't. And I think it sounds nice. Though, I wish I would have seen this super easy and just as colorful Rainbow Water Xylophone at To the Moon and Back - I would have added that as well.

Bo's work. His board is filling up, which means we are almost done.

I bought some easy 3-year old games when they were on sale to use with Bo. My goal in introducing games is to help him learn to follow rules and take turns (or make sure he can do this - it was asked on his evaluation interview and I wasn't sure).

He did great taking turns and following the rules, and then played for awhile on his own afterwards.

I've already shared the following photo in my homeschool mother's journal post, but this is the week we did Letter Xx, so I am putting it here for reference.

Two more letters to go! We are all done - I just need to post them.

Bo spent a good amount of time doing puzzles for Tot School this week. I'm happy he is a fan.

He still loves the Beginner Pattern Blocks (and we've had them for a year now).

And he is really digging the Box Puzzles. (These puzzles are almost half the price at TJ Max if you can find them.)

Lining up his completed puzzles. :)

There's a story behind the next few photos. I set the camera up on a stack of books and used a wireless remote to take photos. He loved it! He was only slightly distracted by it, but in a cute way, while working on Mighty Mind.

I wanted to use the remote to take pictures of me working with him, in case he wanted to sit on my lap again like he did last week.  And while I didn't end up needing it (this week), it made for some cute photos. :)

So, why all of a sudden does he want me sitting with him? I'm not sure, but I think it is related to the desk work he does for speech therapy. He clams up and often hides under the table when he is being pushed and if I am in the room, he wants me to sit with him. Since, he cannot really tell me how he feels, I am concerned by this.  But, since she started bringing the iPad, he has been a little better, but still crawls under the table during his lessons.

We have been listening to Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies for a few months now, but Bo has been asking for them more regularly. He loves to "dance" and twirl to the music. This is a part of Sonlight's P3/4 which I have been informally using with Bo up until now, but plan to use more when he turns 3. (I put the CD on my phone via iTunes so we can listen anywhere).

I love his expressions and how his smile lights up his face.

And for a little boy who doesn't like his hands dirty, he is sure getting into the finger painting!

But, we did have to wash hands before moving on. :)

His all-done look of accomplishment as he slides his paper towards me, haha!

In My House

Oh, boy. He didn't sit still long for this one. He was out of his seat - making real connections with the pictures on the page and the objects in our home. He loves making those connections.

I set up the busy bag for what I call an "Invitation to Play."  He's done a lot of puzzles this week, so I am not sure he will be interested, but he is!

At first, he just wants to play and stack the foam blocks.

Then I introduce him to the puzzle patterns.

He's does a few puzzles and then goes back to building.

Pretend Play

I am still in awe whenever I see Bo playing toys. He really wasn't interested in playing with toys when he was younger. He played with a select few.  He now plays very well, by himself for long periods of time, but also plays well with brother, sister, and Pop.

I took these one day this week when Luke was home and playing G.I. Joes with Bo and Malachi.

And Bo has been loving on the bunnies. Though, I am not sure they feel the same about him and it frustrates him that they run away.

We finished Letter Yy this past week, which means we are on our last letter for tot school! We will do letter Zz this coming week, and then I will take a break while I get ready for Bo's 3rd birthday... and Preschool with Bo!  I will shares Letters Xx, Yy, and Zz then I am planning to sneak in a Literature Based Unit Study for his birthday, so I will hopefully share that too.
