Picnic Table Talk: On The Go

This weeks theme at ABC and 123's Picnic Table Talk is hitting the road, so I thought this would be a great time to share about the 1,600 mile road trip we made to Kentucky last summer. . . and how we survived it!
I have to thank my mother-in-law for this one. She gave my children a big bag full of little wrapped presents. They were to be handed out along the way.  It did not take me long to realize that this would be a great way to motivate kids to willingly get back in the car after short rest stops.
As soon as we were all buckled back up, they got to unwrap a little gift with their name on it. It was great and the selections were wonderful.  She had little things like mini-notepads, small toys, stickers, on the go craft projects like making pipe cleaner people and animals, and even some novelty things. . . but they were new each time and that was a BIG hit!
{I made the bag in the pic for a friend of mine's daughter for their upcoming road trip ~ they make fun little "I care" gifts, too!}
For short trips and being on the go around town, I keep a supply of colored pencils (crayons can melt) and a notepad, healthy snacks, bottles of water, and small toys that I know they love in my backpack in the car.
If you plan to be on the go with your children this summer, check out  Picnic Table Talk for more ideas!

Great ideas....living in Phoenix, crayons are an absolute no-no in the car. But we love the size and shape of Crayola Colored pencils, especially the ones that are hexagon shaped....really easy to grip, plus they're shorter and fit in an index card box.

I am totally with you on the crayon ban. We live in the Phoenix area, too, and I have memories of driving in a station wagon that reeked of melted crayon for years because of some left on a long vacation...
I love the idea of wrapping up some new things for a long trip. What an awesome mother-in-law!

You have a nice mother-in-law. It's a fun idea to keep kiddos occupied and motivated on a very long trip.

This is a really fun, creative idea for the "gifts"! Will try this on our next long road trip!
