Great Musician Series ~ Frederic Chopin

Frederic Chopin is considered one of the greatest composers for the piano this world has ever known. He was able to play at a very young age and was marked as a genius when he was able to play the solo part of a difficult concerto with the full Warsaw orchestra ~ when only nine years old!
"But little did Frederic Chopin know how much more the whole wide world would come to know and love his music for the piano, telling in glorious melody of the beauty of his beloved homeland, Poland." ~ Frederic Chopin, Son of Poland, Early Years, page 152

I am thoroughly enjoying our study on Chopin. We began with the Early Years and it is a delightful living book that begins by telling the story of Frederic Chopin, beginning at his birth. Frederic was a fun and spirited child who had a special gift for music. He loved his homeland of Poland and wrote spirited music that spoke of the people. His pieces are passionate and expressive and captured the hearts of the people. The story is charming and indeed captured the interest of my children. The CD included with the set includes Chopin's compositions that he wrote. It was fun to listen to the music while it was being composed in the story. We would pause our reading to listen to his music and then tried to follow along with the music in the book for fun. The CD also includes coloring sheets that the children were able to color while I read to them. My children were impressed that he was so young when he began, and can recall facts from his life easily because they were learning it in the context of a story.

This set also comes with a discussion guide that includes Reading Comprehension Questions from each chapter, Character Qualities and Tid Bits of Interest about Frederic Chopin's life and time that he lived, including European, Polish and Russian history, the French Revolution of 1848 and more.

We have really enjoyed the first book and look forward to the second book on Chopin's later years. From peeking ahead, I can see that the later years are marked by Romantic era experiences and the emotions and the turbulence of his age. The series takes us all the way up to his death in 1849.

I think this is a great series for a great price and recommend this to anyone who is wanting to do a composer study! I certainly will be considering other composers in the Great Musician series when we are done.
