Math Mammoth

Math Mammoth is comprised of fully reproducible math workbooks and worktexts for grades 1-12.

Available in 4 different series:

As a member of the Crew, I had the opportunity to review 2 products from the Light Blue Series: Grade 4 Complete Curriculum and Grade 5 Complete Curriculum.

Price:

The complete levels 4A/4B or 5A/5B each are each priced at $29.70. Individual levels (A or B alone) can be purchased for $15.50. (Each grade level is 2 levels ~ A and B). Printed versions are also available.

See samples from: 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B or visit the website to see other samples of the program.

Our experience:

Since we are focusing on division, I printed the sections on division for my 4th and 5th grade students. This is a work text, meaning that it is a text book and work book in one. I think this made it a little less intimidating to my students and a blessing to me because it teaches right to the student. While it does teach to the student, however, my boys did need me to explain some topics to them.

What we liked:
  • It was a text book and work book in one
  • Covers the main concepts
  • There is room on the sheets to solve the problems
  • Seems very appropriately grade leveled
  • That is is fully reproducible

What we did not like:
  • Not enough explanation for a curriculum that teaches to the child
  • Too much repetition (it is designed to be mastery oriented, but continual repetition seemed like busy work).
  • Does not continually review concepts (they had to flip back to an earlier section to remember what they learned)
  • It does not have enough real life application.
  • It makes math seems like, well math.

More and more, I am turning towards living math programs and I don't think Math Mammoth qualifies. However, I did enjoy being able to print only what I need and found that this is great for when I need to give my children some extra practice. I think this program would be great for anyone who likes a traditional math program and needs an affordable curriculum that they can use for multiple students.

Other Crew Mates reviewed different levels and series, so be sure to visit the Crew blog to read more reviews as they are posted.
