Homeschool Highlights #9

This has been a good week for us. It feels good to be in some sort of a routine and I am actually thinking about making a schedule! {gasp} I will still pray for the Father to order our day each and every day, but I think we will do certain subjects during certain times and on certain days of the week.

Tot School/Preschool

  • We have been on break from Tot School and I have been planning for a new series of Tot School posts. I am excited and a little nervous at the same time. She has been enjoying this time p.l.a.y.i.n.g! I am amazed at how good she is while I do school with the boys (she plays for hours in her room and the playroom). She and Malachi have been playing well together also and even have story-lines while they play! But, I still think she will be excited to do Tot School again.
  • I have a review and giveaway coming to kick off our new Tot School series, and will give you a peek at what that is in another post.
  • We wrapped up our Alphabet Fun series with the Letter O! That post includes my wrap-up thoughts on our preschool experience.
  • I have almost completed my plan for kindergarten and will will kick off a new series of posts (for our Kindergarten Corner) beginning next month (when Malachi turns 5).

English/Language Arts

  • Bible Reading: Proverb a day, and each boy is in another book of their choosing (Nathan is in Isaiah, Dylan is in 1 Samuel, and Jordan is reading Psalms)
  • Madsen Method: We are plugging away on this and will share our update in a future post. We are half way through lesson 7 in Section 2.
  • All About Spelling: Lessons 1 and 2
  • Language Lessons
  • Simply Grammar: we do this orally, and then the boys do a pictorial study and write a story about the picture.
  • Getty-Dubay Italics ~ Nathan and Jordan both finished their book for this year. Dylan has 40 pages left.
  • Read Aloud: We finished All of a Kind Family and Boyhood and Beyond and started Mara, daughter of the Nile.

Math:

Phew! That is a lot of math! Science:
  • Apologia Zoology 3: Land Animals of the 6th Day ~ Nathan and Dylan finished Chapter 6: Primarily Primates
  • Apologia General Science: Jordan worked on Module 2 ~ he finished "On Your Own" 2.8 and we printed the lapbooks for the study guide.
Nature Study:
  • We read chapters 1 and 2 in Discovering Nature in Winter. We also started this week's challenge on cattails for The Outdoor Hour.
History/Geography:
  • Abram's Journey
Up for a Challenge?
  • We will do this week's Instant Challenge, Mouse House, tomorrow and post our solution Monday morning along with a new challenge.
Odds and Ends
  • The boys finished Dodge Ball and started Volley Ball this last week. They start Chess Club this week.
  • We are learning to type with lessons from Christian Keyboarding (review coming soon).
  • We will start Zeezok's composer series on Chopin (for review) this week. It looks like a neat study.
I started reading Debra Bell's The Complete Guide to Homeschooling (for review) and I am especially interested in her thoughts on homeschool burnout. I had been feeling a bit burnt out before this week. I did not even feel like blogging. I feel like I am on the upswing of things, but I am pondering how homeschool burnout occurs and what we can do to overcome and prevent it.
