Learning a Trade

Jordan says that when he grows up he wants to be a mechanic. He is very mechanical! So, we arranged for him to apprentice with a friend who is a mechanic. Today, he did a complete front brake job on Luke's 1987 Chevy Pickup Truck. When I picked him up he was covered in grease, but he said had a great time! He said that he did all the work - that Brian told him what to do and then let him do it! I was so happy to hear this! I wasn't sure if he would have him watch the first time or help, and he had him do it all. Jordan said the highlight of the experience was using the impact wrench (that big power thing that takes the lug nuts off). He thought that was cool. The hardest part he said was washing the bearings. He said not even a speck of dirt can be in them when they were installed. I guess the brakes were pretty bad, so I'm glad they are getting it done and that Jordan gets to learn in the process. Whether or not he grows up to be a mechanic, this is a great skill that he will have. And one of the things I love about homeschooling is that we can make the time for him to have experiences like these. Today was the last day of swimming lessons and it was "family swim day." We all went swimming! The boys did an awesome job this session. Dylan will continue to work on his Guppy skills and Nathan will continue on as a Minnow next session. Jordan completed his Minnow skills and will advance to Fish and Malachi completed his Pike skills and will advance to Eels.
Here are Jordan and Malachi's ribbons and awards for advancing to the next level.
Then, this afternoon, the boys had Homeschool P.E. at the YMCA. Luke has arranged to play floor hockey with all the schools during P.E. this month, including homeschool! Floor Hockey starts in January and this is one of the boys' favorite sports!
A busy day! School started at 8. Handwriting. Grammar. Phonics. Math. We did school until 10:00. Swimming lessons from 10:15 to 11:00. 11:00-11:30 to shower, get dressed and settle down. Lunch from 11:30-12:00. Jordan worked on the truck from 12:00 to 4:00. Nathan and Dylan went to P.E. from 2:00 to 3:00 and we made cut out cookies for one of Malachi's preschool projects, had company stop by and then went to pick up Jordan. Had dinner, cleaned up, got ready for bed, started a new book and read for about an hour. . . just trying to figure out what exactly we got done today! We stayed busy, it seemed. . . well, like it was one of those days!

  1. Awesome for Jordan! And congrats to the boys, too.

I loved your other two last blog entries, too. So much fun! So much better than a public school...
