Homonyms, Synonyms and Antonyms

My 3rd and 4th grader have been working on the book Homonyms, Synonyms & Antonyms. I heard about this great E-Book here, and downloaded it from Barker Creek. I thought it would be a fun book for Nathan and Dylan to work on and build some FUNdamental skills!
From the website, "Can you explain what a homonym is...in one simple sentence? How about a synonym or antonym? Can you give your students several memorable examples of each? Your children will be able to confidently read and write these three types of words once they complete the exercises in this Building FUNdamentals activity book."
In each lesson they are working on capitalization, punctuation, writing complete sentences, spelling, word meanings, vocabulary development, and dictionary skills.
First they "Set it in concrete" by saying the work, writing the word and then spelling the word. Second, they "Nail it down" by finding out what it means. They look each word up in the dictionary and define them. Third, they "Create a blueprint" by drawing pictures of the words. Fourth, they "Tack it on" by doing a hands on activity to extend their understanding. Lastly, they write each word in a sentence, using capitals and periods and correct punctuation!
Here is what I do. I stick a page in each boy's box with all the materials they need to complete a the page, including the activity.
Here is Dylan's box with the page for Sale/Sail.
In the box are materials to create a sailboat and then write an advertisement with the caption, "Check out this sailboat! It's on Sale!"
Here is his finished notebook page with his sailboat.
Nathan's first page was flour/flower. For his hands on activity, he made a sugar cookie in the shape of a flower from fresh ground flour that he ground himself! I have never had a whole grain sugar cookie, but they were yummy!
More of what they have been doing.
We love to notebook and do hands on activities, so my boys are really enjoying this. . . plus the pages are a welcome addition to "what's in the box!"
