Learning Latin can be fun! | A Review of Visual Latin

We have been laughing, I'm mean learning Latin with Visual Latin.

Why learn Latin?  Download the introductory lessons for free to find out!

I discovered that Latin opens the door to other languages and helps us improve on our own language. I can already see why!

A simple explanation tells you why Visual Latin is a great way to learn Latin.

So, why is this a great way to learn Latin?

"It’s video. Everyone likes video.
It’s self-paced. You can go through as quickly or as slowly as you want.
It’s bite-sized. We’ve kept everything short to make it easier to digest.
It’s simple to repeat a lesson. If you missed something, just watch it again.
It’s portable. You can watch it on almost any device anywhere at anytime.
It’s fun. Latin is dead, but we’re bringing it back one laugh at a time.
It’s great for aspiring comedians. (Ok, not really.)"

Mr. Thomas is rather funny. . . in his own funny sort of way.

He makes these videos what they are.

He is a natural teacher. Comfortable. Relaxed. Interesting. Funny.

He knows Latin, too. He's been telling jokes teaching Latin for 15 years.

And he's a homeschool dad!

Each Latin lesson covers:
  1. Grammar
  2. Sentences
  3. Reading

First you watch a short video, then you do a worksheet. You can try a complete lesson for free to see more.

I love that Dwayne Thomas does all the teaching. I don't have to know a thing about Latin! In fact, I am learning too! You "just hit play and start learning."

And they don't mind doing the lessons! In fact, I think they are hoping to learn enough to tell a few jokes. :-) I'm hoping they will learn some English too, and maybe even be inspired to want to learn Spanish.

Geared towards ages 9 and up, Visual Latin costs $25 for 10 lessons. You can order a DVD or download the lessons to watch on your computer or even on your iPod.

So, far we have been watching them on my computer as a group, but my iPod is synced and ready to go. It will be a great way to review the lessons on the go ~ because homeschoolers do that. They school in the car. My kids still remember singing "the Southern border of the United States..." you know, "California, Arizona, New Mexico..."

Sorry. Dwayne has that affect on you. Don't be surprised if you start rambling on about things after you watch the videos. Or start talking to yourself. He's kind of funny that way. The kids like that. But, maybe if they can remember that...

Which reminds me. Visual Latin is not only visual, it is multi-sensorial. You hear it, see it, speak it and write it.

We like it. We are still working our way through the first 10 lessons, but I am hoping to see more Visual Latin in our future!

Isn't he looking so grown up? He looks like a high-schooler ~ and he's happy to be learning Latin.

Thanks Visual Latin guys for letting me try this out for free in exchange for an honest review!

  1. First of all, before I even read the caption under the picture of Jordan, my first thought was, "WOW! He is looking SO grown up!" I did a double take because I wondered if it was a picture from a website for review, then read your caption and realized it was your Jordan!! He is changing Michelle:-)!

I have seen this Latin on several blogs over the last month and have wondered about it lots. Now that I see it on yours I really, really wonder if I should consider it for Hanna. When we left her public school her principal gave me a piece of advice--make sure you have her take Latin while you are homeschooling, you won't regret it.

So, what do you think, should I give it a shot? I am going to try the free lesson this week.

Thank you for this review. It couldn't have come at a better time for me!
