Courage, New Hampshire ~ The Travail of Sarah Pine {a Colony Bay Productions Review}

Colony Bay Productions is a small group of professional filmmakers who are "dedicated to telling the adventurous, heroic and exceptional story of America in a way that both challenges and inspires the audience."

Courage, New Hampshire ~ The Travail of Sarah Pine, is the first movie in a series depicting life in America just prior to the Revolutionary War.
"In the winter of 1770, the township of Courage lies on the raw edge of the frontier, in western New Hampshire. When a detachment of British soldiers arrive in search of deserters, they fail to catch their quarry, but one of them does catch the eye of the justice of the peace. Sergeant Bob Wheedle, of the 29th Regiment, was here a year before — and he left something behind."
Sergeant Bob Weedle is arrested and stands accused of deserting Sarah Pine ~ and their child born out of wedlock. In 1770, at a time when our nation was being built on Biblical principles, fornication was not tolerated. And yes, that word is used in the movie, and Scripture is used to bring charges against Weedle.
"And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife." Exodus 22:16
So, a trial ensues and we hold our breath. . . will Weedle be accused of desertion?

I love historical fiction and I love that history is brought alive in Courage, New Hampshire ~ The Travail of Sarah Pine. This is just the beginning of what is to be a "compelling series that chronicles life in a small township in 18th Century New Hampshire."

I'm very excited about the possibility of this series. The first episode proves to be compelling and takes us back in time with strong dialogue, excellent film shots, likable characters, and authentic dress and setting. For an independent film production, the quality was excellent!  The story was interesting from the first scene, although a bit hard to follow, at first. We were all a little confused as to what was going on and we had to explain a few things to the children - like what fornication is.  My 12 year old said it was like they took a scene out of a movie - he expected more, like a battle scene or fight. I explained that the movie was a part of a series, so in a sense, there is more. I am not sure how many there will be, but the next episode is due to release in October.

I love that it includes historical and biblical references and I especially liked Sarah's gentle and meek spirit ~ she is sweet and positive and references Scripture. It seems that her trust gets her into trouble, but that same trust also sees her through her travail. I think, above all, this is an excellent way to bring history alive and I'm especially excited that this series will tell the "road to revolution" and set the stage for learning about the American Revolution with a deeper perspective.

"Teaching With Courage" Lesson Plans for Episode 1 are available August 10th. They will include: lesson plans, worksheets, visual aids, activities, and informal evaluation guides. The lessons use the customs, language, & references in the film to teach students about everyday life in pre-revolution America. Age appropriate sections are geared towards grades 4-6, middle school, and high school. I think this will be a fabulous resource to supplement American History!
