Daniel's Duck {FI♥AR}

Daniel's Duck, by Clyde Robert Bulla, is a Five in a Row selection from Volume 3 and was also one of Malachi's 2nd grade Sonlight readers this past year. The kids had been asking to row since we finished Core A and we had a homeschool family staying with us for a week (in April!), so I thought it would be fun to row a book while they were here!

Social Studies: Tennessee, Cabin Life, Long Winters, Emotions

Most of this was discussion right out of the manual. But, we did do Erica's Road Trip USA for the state of Tennessee.

Language Arts: Awesome Adjectives

This is not in the manual, but I saw it on Susana's blog and thought it tied in perfectly with the theme of the book of self worth.

Elli's says, "I am sweet and I am a monkey." :)

Art: Soap Carving

This was an idea from the manual was a little harder than I thought it would be. The soap was almost too soft and crumbled easily, but it sure made the house smell good. :) (And I loved that the older kids wanted to carve too!)

Eliana's "school of whales."

Science: Seasons, Long Winter Nights

We reviewed seasons with The Berenstain Bears' Almanac ~ AYear in Bear County from The Berenstain Bears' Big Book of Science and Nature. I also read Guess How Much I Love You All Year Round (which I bought to read with Bo). And we made a season's bag book using Mama Jenn's My Book of Seasons

Memory Making: Fair themed food and carnival games

Homemade mini corn dogs

with homemade fries and lemonade.

We also made homemade caramels and marshmallows this week!

Balloons with candy inside.

I originally had the idea to pin them up and throw darts to pop them to reveal the candy inside, but instead we played various games with them. For one game, we put a line on the floor, divided the balloons equally on both sides and the object of the game was to get all your balloons on the other side of the line in the time allowed. It was late by the time we got to play, so my pictures didn't come out great, but we had a great time!

One of the teen girls staying with us came up with the following idea from Pinterest ~ a punch box. She and her sister both worked hard to cut out all the circles and I think they did a great job!

Behind each tissue was candy and a small toy and all they had to do was punch the hole and grab the prize!

We also had a Pie eating contest (whipped cream pies on paper plates!).  My friend told me that her little boy loved this and remembered it the most. :)

More pics from our week:

A silly mustache pic of Elli. :)
Girls did their nails. (How cool to have 3 teen girls here for the week?!)

Pretty nails. :)

Pretty girl. :) Emily curled Eliana's hair for her. ♥

A simple, but memorable row!  And having friends here for a week made it even more sweeter. :)
